Make delicious, satisfying veggie burgers at home that hold together and taste great. This black bean burger recipe is perfect for grilling or pan-frying and is a wholesome alternative for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (15 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil, plus more for cooking
  • 4 whole wheat burger buns
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, ketchup, mustard

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, mash the black beans with a fork until mostly mashed but still slightly chunky.
  2. Add the rolled oats, chopped onion, minced garlic, chopped cilantro, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper to the bowl with the mashed beans.
  3. Mix everything together until well combined.
  4. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  5. Add the cooked onion and garlic mixture to the bean mixture. Mix well.
  6. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, about 3/4 inch thick.
  7. If time allows, refrigerate the patties for at least 30 minutes to help them firm up. This step is crucial for preventing the burgers from falling apart.
  8. To cook, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat, or preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
  9. Carefully place the patties in the hot skillet or on the grill. Cook for 5-7 minutes per side, until golden brown and heated through.
  10. Serve the veggie burgers on whole wheat buns with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of smoked paprika to the patty mixture.
  • If your mixture seems too wet, add a tablespoon or two more of oats to help bind it.
  • Ensure the patties are cooked thoroughly to achieve a good texture.
