Make the famous, warm, slightly sweet yeast rolls from Texas Roadhouse at home, complete with the signature honey cinnamon butter spread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for butter)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened (for butter)
  • 1/4 cup honey (for butter)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for butter)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of the granulated sugar. Let this mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  2. Mix wet ingredients: Add the remaining sugar, egg, melted butter, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until combined.
  3. Add flour: Gradually add the flour, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 6 to 8 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. First rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size. This step is key for fluffy yeast bread.
  6. Shape the rolls: Gently punch down the risen dough. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth ball.
  7. Second rise: Place the dough balls onto a greased 9×13 inch baking pan, leaving about 1 inch between them. Cover loosely and let them rise again for 30 to 45 minutes, or until puffy.
  8. Bake the rolls: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15 to 18 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
  9. Prepare the honey cinnamon butter: While the rolls bake, beat the softened butter, powdered sugar, honey, and cinnamon together in a small bowl until light and fluffy.
  10. Serve: Brush the tops of the warm homemade bread recipe rolls lightly with melted butter immediately after removing them from the oven. Serve warm with the cinnamon honey butter spread recipe.

Notes

  • For the softest texture, ensure your water temperature is correct for activating the yeast; too hot will kill it.
  • If your kitchen is cool, place the dough bowl inside your oven (turned off) with a pan of hot water on the rack below to create a warm, humid environment for rising.
  • You can brush the tops of the rolls with melted butter halfway through baking for extra richness.
