Make this classic, hearty Tater Tot Casserole with ground beef for an easy weeknight dinner. This recipe delivers a creamy filling topped with perfectly crispy tater tots.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of chicken soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 bag (about 28 ounces) frozen tater tots

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the ground beef and chopped onion in a large skillet over medium heat until the beef is fully browned and the onion is soft. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. In the same skillet, stir in the cream of mushroom soup, cream of chicken soup, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Heat the mixture until it is warm and well combined. Do not boil.
  4. Stir half of the shredded cheddar cheese into the beef and soup mixture. Spread this meat mixture evenly into the bottom of your prepared baking dish.
  5. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the meat mixture. Do not thaw the tots first.
  6. Bake for 25 minutes, or until the filling is bubbly.
  7. Remove the casserole from the oven. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese over the tater tots.
  8. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for another 5 to 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the tater tots are golden brown and crispy on top.
  9. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before you serve it.

Notes

  • For extra crispy tater tots, you can lightly spray the tops of the tots with cooking spray before the final 5-10 minutes of baking.
  • You can substitute cream of celery soup for one of the cream of mushroom soups for a slight flavor change.
  • This makes a great make ahead tater tot casserole; assemble everything, cover, and refrigerate up to 24 hours. Add 10-15 minutes to the initial baking time if baking directly from the refrigerator.
