A simple and delicious recipe for homemade sloppy joes, perfect for a quick weeknight dinner that kids and adults will love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and onion. Cook, breaking up the meat, until the beef is browned and the onion is tender, about 8-10 minutes. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Stir in ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, salt, and pepper.
  3. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for at least 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld.
  4. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the hamburger buns. Top with the other halves.
  5. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a spicier sloppy joe, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce.
  • You can substitute tomato sauce for ketchup if you prefer a less sweet flavor.
  • Toast your hamburger buns for extra texture.
