Make a decadent, velvety hot chocolate using real dark chocolate. This stovetop recipe yields a thick, comforting beverage perfect for cozy winter nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups Whole Milk
  • 1 cup Heavy Cream
  • 4 ounces Dark Chocolate (60-70% cacao), finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch of Salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the whole milk and heavy cream in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Heat until the mixture is steaming but not boiling.
  2. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the finely chopped dark chocolate, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt to the warm milk mixture.
  3. Let the mixture sit undisturbed for two minutes to allow the chocolate to soften.
  4. Whisk the mixture slowly until the chocolate is completely melted and the cocoa powder is fully incorporated, resulting in a smooth liquid.
  5. Return the saucepan to low heat. Whisk constantly for 3 to 5 minutes until the hot chocolate thickens slightly. Do not let it boil.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows if desired.

Notes

  • For a thicker hot chocolate, reduce the milk slightly or add 1 teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon of cold water during the final heating step. Whisk until thickened.
  • Use high-quality dark chocolate for the best flavor. This is key for a gourmet chocolate beverage.
  • For an adult version, add 1 ounce of bourbon or dark rum per serving after removing from heat.
