Make smooth, creamy mashed sweet potatoes with honey and butter. This easy recipe is a comforting side dish perfect for holiday meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into uniform chunks
  • 1/2 cup whole milk or heavy cream
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Pinch of black pepper

Instructions

  1. Place the sweet potato chunks in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the water.
  2. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to maintain a steady simmer. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are very tender when pierced with a fork.
  3. Drain the sweet potatoes completely in a colander. Let them sit for 5 minutes to allow excess steam to evaporate. This step helps prevent watery mash.
  4. Return the drained sweet potatoes to the hot, empty pot.
  5. Add the milk (or cream), butter, honey, brown sugar, and cinnamon to the pot.
  6. Use a potato masher or an electric hand mixer on low speed to mash the ingredients together until smooth. Do not overmix, as this can make the potatoes gummy.
  7. Stir in the salt and pepper. Taste the mash and add more salt or cinnamon if needed.
  8. Serve the creamy mashed sweet potatoes warm as a holiday side dish.

Notes

  • For the creamiest texture, warm the milk and butter slightly before adding them to the potatoes.
  • If you prefer a less sweet flavor, reduce the honey and brown sugar amounts by half.
  • For a savory variation, substitute the honey and sugar with 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika and 1 clove of minced garlic added during the mashing process.
