Whip up this easy, no-cook recipe for a big batch of homemade hot cocoa mix using simple pantry staples. This mix creates a rich, velvety hot chocolate that is perfect for keeping stocked or packaging as a thoughtful gift in a jar.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups granulated white sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder (use high-quality for best flavor)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered milk (omit for dairy-free version)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (this helps create a creamier texture)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional secret ingredient)

Instructions

  1. Gather all your dry ingredients: sugar, cocoa powder, powdered milk (if using), salt, cornstarch, and cinnamon.
  2. Place all ingredients into a very large bowl.
  3. Use a whisk to thoroughly combine all the components. Whisk for at least two minutes to break up any clumps of cocoa powder or sugar and to evenly distribute the cornstarch and salt.
  4. Taste a small amount mixed with hot water or milk to adjust sweetness or cocoa intensity if desired.
  5. Transfer the finished hot cocoa mix to an airtight container for storage. This recipe makes a large batch suitable for stocking your pantry or dividing into smaller jars for homemade gifts.
  6. To prepare one serving, mix 1/3 cup of the dry mix with 1 cup of hot milk or hot water. Stir until completely dissolved.

Notes

  • For a richer, more decadent cup, use hot milk instead of water when preparing your drink.
  • If you want to make a hot cocoa gift in a jar, layer the dry mix in a clean jar and top with mini marshmallows or chocolate chips before sealing.
  • To make this a dairy-free or vegan hot cocoa mix, simply omit the powdered milk. You may want to add 1/4 cup of non-dairy creamer powder if you desire a creamier result without milk.
  • Store this dry mix in a cool, dark place for up to six months.
