Forget instant packets. You can make rich, creamy, and decadent homemade hot cocoa from scratch on your stovetop in minutes. This recipe uses simple pantry staples for intensely satisfying warm chocolate drinks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups whole milk (or milk of your choice)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional, for extra richness)

Instructions

  1. Combine the milk, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and salt in a medium saucepan.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Whisk the mixture constantly until the sugars and cocoa powder are fully dissolved and the mixture is hot, but not boiling. Do not let it boil.
  3. If using, stir in the chocolate chips until they are completely melted and the cocoa is smooth.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the rich and creamy cocoa into mugs. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For an extra decadent warm chocolate drink, use half-and-half instead of some of the milk.
  • You can substitute the granulated and brown sugar amounts if you prefer a sweeter or less sweet beverage.
  • Top with homemade whipped cream or marshmallows for the best homemade hot chocolate experience.
