A simple and delicious recipe for golden, custardy French toast, perfect for a sweet and satisfying breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 thick slices of bread (brioche or challah recommended)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Butter, for cooking
  • Maple syrup, for serving
  • Powdered sugar or fresh fruit, for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), sugar, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  2. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are coated. Let the bread soak for about 30 seconds per side.
  3. Melt a tablespoon of butter in a non-stick skillet or on a griddle over medium heat.
  4. Place the coated bread slices in the hot skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Repeat with the remaining bread slices, adding more butter as needed.
  6. Serve immediately with maple syrup and your favorite toppings like powdered sugar or fresh fruit.

Notes

  • Slightly stale bread works best as it absorbs the egg mixture without becoming too soggy.
  • Adjust cinnamon and sugar to your preference.
  • For a richer flavor, you can use heavy cream or half-and-half instead of milk.
