Make this quick, creamy, and tangy homemade tartar sauce in minutes. It uses simple ingredients like mayonnaise, pickles, lemon juice, and capers, making it the best sauce for fried fish, crab cakes, or as a zesty dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup dill pickle relish (or finely chopped dill pickles)
  • 2 tablespoons capers, drained and finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Gather all your ingredients in a medium bowl.
  2. Add the mayonnaise, dill pickle relish, chopped capers, fresh lemon juice, and Dijon mustard to the bowl.
  3. Stir all ingredients together until they are fully combined and the sauce is smooth and creamy.
  4. Fold in the fresh dill and parsley.
  5. Season the sauce with black pepper.
  6. Taste the sauce and add a small squeeze more lemon juice if you want extra tang.
  7. Cover the bowl and chill the tartar sauce in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to blend.

Notes

  • For a copycat version similar to restaurant style, substitute 1/4 cup of the mayonnaise with sour cream or plain Greek yogurt for extra creaminess.
  • If you do not have fresh herbs, you can use 1 teaspoon of dried dill, but fresh herbs provide a brighter flavor.
  • This sauce is perfect for pairing with crispy fish and chips or as a dipping sauce for french fries.
