Make fair-style apple fritters quickly at home without yeast. These golden, crispy fritters are coated in a simple vanilla glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Gently fold in the diced apples.
  5. Heat about 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Carefully drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Remove fritters with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  8. While the fritters are cooling slightly, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk, a teaspoon at a time, if needed to reach desired consistency.
  9. Dip the warm fritters into the glaze or drizzle the glaze over them.

Notes

  • For best results, use firm apples like Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala.
  • Maintain a consistent oil temperature for even cooking.
  • You can substitute maple extract for vanilla extract in the glaze for a maple flavor.
