A simple and delicious fall dessert featuring tender baked apples and a crunchy oat topping. Perfect for a cozy evening or a family gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (such as Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9-inch pie plate or an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Add the cold butter pieces to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry blender, your fingers, or a fork to cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
  7. Let the crisp cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a crispier topping, ensure your butter is very cold when you cut it into the dry ingredients.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a classic treat.
  • You can scale this recipe up for a 9×13 inch baking dish; increase baking time slightly as needed.
