Make incredibly soft, fluffy, and buttery dinner rolls in about one hour. This reliable recipe uses basic ingredients for fast homemade bread perfect for any meal or holiday gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/3 cups Milk, warm (about 110°F)
  • 1/3 cup Water, warm (about 110°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast
  • 1/3 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 5 tablespoons Salted Butter, melted
  • 1 large Egg, room temperature
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Salt
  • 4 to 4 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • For Topping: 4 tablespoons Salted Butter, melted, mixed with 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, warm water, and yeast. Let this stand for 5 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy.
  2. Stir the sugar, 5 tablespoons of melted butter, egg, and salt into the yeast mixture.
  3. Add 4 cups of flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 5 to 7 minutes, adding more flour only as needed until the dough is smooth and slightly tacky, not sticky.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 30 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
  6. Gently punch down the risen dough. Divide the dough into 18 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth ball.
  7. Arrange the dough balls in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan, leaving a small space between each roll for them to touch as they bake.
  8. Cover the pan loosely and let the rolls rise again in a warm spot for 15 to 20 minutes. They should look puffy.
  9. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Bake the rolls for 15 to 18 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
  11. Immediately after removing the rolls from the oven, brush the tops generously with the melted garlic butter mixture (if using) or plain melted butter.
  12. Serve your soft dinner rolls warm.

Notes

  • For Texas Roadhouse style rolls, brush with melted butter mixed with a pinch of cinnamon sugar immediately after baking.
  • If you prefer a stand mixer, use the dough hook attachment and mix on low speed until the dough comes together, then knead on medium-low for 5 minutes.
  • If you want cheesy garlic rolls, press a small cube of mozzarella cheese into the center of each dough ball before the second rise.
