Make this rich, flavorful Cowboy Butter Dipping Sauce in under 15 minutes. This garlic herb butter dip is the best butter sauce for steak and works well as a compound butter for chicken or vegetables.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons shallots, finely minced (or green onions)
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Combine the softened butter, minced garlic, minced shallots, parsley, chives, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, red pepper flakes (if using), Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper in a medium bowl.
  2. Mix all ingredients together using a fork or a rubber spatula until everything is evenly incorporated. Work until you have a uniform, flavorful spread.
  3. For immediate use as a dipping sauce, you can gently melt half of the mixture in a small saucepan over low heat until just melted, leaving the other half soft for spreading.
  4. To serve as a compound butter for steak or chicken, spoon the mixture onto plastic wrap, roll it into a log shape, and chill for at least one hour until firm. Slice off rounds when ready to serve over hot food.
  5. Serve your Cowboy Butter Dipping Sauce warm alongside grilled steak, chicken, shrimp, or use it as a dipping sauce for crusty bread.

Notes

  • If you prefer a fully melted sauce, melt all the butter gently over low heat. Stir in the remaining ingredients and keep warm, but do not boil.
  • This recipe makes a fantastic marinade and topping butter for grilled vegetables like asparagus or corn on the cob.
  • For a richer flavor, substitute 1 tablespoon of the butter with high-quality olive oil if you plan to serve it immediately as a sauce.
