Prepare this hearty, savory breakfast strata the night before for a warm, delicious, and stress-free start to your Christmas morning. This casserole feeds a crowd easily.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound bulk pork sausage, cooked and drained
  • 1 (10.25 ounce) package frozen hash browns, thawed
  • 1 pound sourdough bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Spread the cooked sausage evenly over the bottom of the prepared dish.
  3. Layer the thawed hash browns over the sausage.
  4. Distribute the sourdough bread cubes over the hash browns.
  5. Sprinkle the Gruyère and cheddar cheeses over the bread layer.
  6. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper until well combined. This creates your custard base.
  7. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered ingredients in the baking dish. Gently press down on the bread to help it absorb the liquid.
  8. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or preferably overnight. This is the key to your stress-free holiday morning.
  9. When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the plastic wrap.
  10. Bake uncovered for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed, set in the center, and golden brown on top.
  11. Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving this easy Christmas breakfast.

Notes

  • For the best results when making ahead, assemble the casserole the night before and keep it refrigerated until you are ready to bake it in the morning.
  • If you need to bake it sooner than overnight, allow the assembled casserole to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before placing it in the preheated oven.
  • You can substitute bacon or ham for the sausage if you prefer a different savory meat for this holiday brunch casserole.
