Make this rich, velvety chocolate sauce in just five minutes using basic pantry ingredients like cocoa powder. It is perfect for drizzling over ice cream, pancakes, or using as a dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional, for extra richness)

Instructions

  1. Combine the sugar, cocoa powder, and salt in a small saucepan. Whisk these dry ingredients together until fully mixed.
  2. Pour in the water and whisk until the mixture is smooth and no lumps remain.
  3. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly as the mixture heats up. Do not let it boil rapidly.
  4. Continue stirring until the sugar dissolves and the sauce thickens slightly, about 3 to 4 minutes. It should coat the back of a spoon.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and the butter, if using, until the butter melts completely.
  6. Pour the sauce into a heatproof jar or bowl. The sauce will thicken more as it cools.
  7. Use warm for a thinner drizzle or cool completely for a thicker topping.

Notes

  • For a non-dairy option, omit the butter or substitute it with a teaspoon of coconut oil.
  • If the sauce seems too thick after cooling, whisk in a teaspoon of hot water or milk until you reach your desired consistency.
  • This homemade chocolate sauce tastes superior to store-bought syrups.
