A quick and easy beef and broccoli stir-fry recipe, perfect for a weeknight dinner. This Chinese-American takeout favorite is made with tender beef, crisp broccoli, and a savory garlic soy sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, plus more for cooking
  • 1 pound broccoli florets
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Cooked rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, toss the sliced flank steak with 1 tablespoon soy sauce and 1 tablespoon cornstarch. Let it marinate for 10 minutes.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef and stir-fry until browned. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Add a little more vegetable oil to the skillet if needed. Add the broccoli florets and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until they are bright green and slightly tender-crisp.
  4. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the skillet and stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth, 1/4 cup soy sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, and sesame oil.
  6. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet with the broccoli. Bring to a simmer and cook for 1-2 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly.
  7. Return the cooked beef to the skillet and toss to coat with the sauce. Cook for another minute until the beef is heated through.
  8. Serve immediately over cooked rice.

Notes

  • For extra tender beef, you can freeze the flank steak for about 30 minutes before slicing. This makes it easier to get thin, even slices.
  • If you don’t have oyster sauce, you can substitute with an additional tablespoon of soy sauce and a teaspoon of sugar.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables like sliced carrots, bell peppers, or snap peas to your stir-fry.
