Make crispy, cheesy mozzarella sticks in your air fryer. This recipe uses a double-breading and freezing method to prevent them from exploding, ensuring a perfect snack every time. Ideal for parties or a kid-friendly treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound string cheese, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Cooking spray
  • Marinara sauce, for dipping

Instructions

  1. Pat the string cheese pieces dry with paper towels.
  2. Set up a breading station with three shallow dishes: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with panko breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Dip each string cheese piece first in flour, shaking off excess.
  4. Then, dip in the egg mixture, letting excess drip off.
  5. Finally, coat thoroughly with the panko mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
  6. Place the breaded cheese sticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Ensure they do not touch.
  7. Freeze for at least 1 hour, or until firm. This step is crucial to prevent them from bursting in the air fryer.
  8. Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (190°C).
  9. Lightly spray the frozen mozzarella sticks with cooking spray.
  10. Arrange the sticks in a single layer in the air fryer basket, working in batches if necessary. Do not overcrowd.
  11. Air fry for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  12. Serve immediately with marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • For the best results and to prevent blowouts, ensure the mozzarella sticks are frozen solid before air frying.
  • You can add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the breadcrumbs for a little heat.
  • These are best enjoyed immediately after cooking.
  • Consider these a great option if you are looking into meal planning for easy snacks.
